What Is This??

This is an AUTOMATIC DEAD-END FLUSHER.  About a hundred of these have been installed throughout the Water System.  What will this do for our customers?  If you live at the end of a dead-end road, the end of section of main, or in a low area,  this will guarantee that you always have fresh water.  When completed, these automatic flushers will be set to run at night so our customers will not lose water pressure during the daytime hours.  The flushers will also run several times a week to minimize the water loss and run-off.

This is a HYDRANT -- it looks like a fire hydrant, but it might not have sufficient flow (gallons per minute) to fight fires or fill up a tanker truck.  Rural water systems such as ours are designed and funded to provide clean drinking water -- not to provide fire flow to every location.  That's why the bonnets (tops) of the hydrants are painted different colors to indicate their flow:
Green     > 1,000 gallons per minute
Orange     500 - 1,000 gallons per minute
Red        350 - 500 gallons per minute
Black        < 350 gallons per minute
